Data integrity is something we talk about a lot. But what is data integrity, and why should you and your organization care about it? What is Data Integrity? We should probably start with a definition of Data Integrity, so we are all speaking the same language.

What is Enterprise Data Integrity? The definition of enterprise data integrity is the consistency and accuracy of common data across multiple enterprise systems. The key questions being, do you trust your data of critical decision-making? And does your data line up from one system to another?

A few weeks ago at the first-ever, virtual Esri User Conference, Jack Dangermond talked about how GIS is “Interconnecting Our World.” This statement has never been truer.

At asset intensive organizations, data is shared across multiple utility business systems. These systems include: Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Enterprise Asset Management (EAM), Customer Information Systems (CIS), Outage Management Systems (OMS), and Distribution Management Systems (DMS). For each system, the data must reside in the application’s native database to support its functionality.

One of the keys to successful enterprise integrations is transparency. The reason for this is because users want to know what is happening to their enterprise data as it moves between multiple systems to ensure its integrity. With many solutions, this transparency is lacking or non-existent.
